03/03/07 - State Meeting in Montgomery
I had a state meeting in Montgomery with the Southern Cruisers. Me and a few other officers left early in the morning headed to montgomery. I took the goldwing since we would be on the hightway quite a bit. The meeting went about as normal and were done by 1PM. We have a state park contest this year, where we are trying to visit all the state parks in Alabama, many folks will be surprised to hear that there are actually 23 of them. Oscar said we could circle through Auburn and pick up chewacla and then go up 280 and pick up wind creek near Alex City. Its been a LONG time since I've driven through Auburn, several impressions, the area around Auburn, it looks like the world after nuclear holocost. You stop at exits and there are nothing but abandoned buildings, We had two bikes that darn near ran out of gas it was so long before we found an open gas station, apparently debit card readers haven't reached that part of the world yet either. Impression two, The sleepy town atmosphere at Auburn is WAY gone. The city around the campus has morphed into a crowded mess. I thought the place had a certain charm a decade ago. Now its just crowded and noisy. Impression three, There are serious rednecks in Auburn, its been a LONG time since I've had rednecks in a big old pickup truck raised about 6 feet off the ground run by me screaming as if its fooball season for no other reason except that they can, Its clear to me why Alabama and Auburn don't butt heads too often on recruits. Auburn truely is and remains a rural atmosphere. I don't think most kids from more urban settings will ever fit in. Which may be why Alabama has been recruiting much better in Birmingham since probation. It wound up a 300 mile day for me, Wooo Hooo!!!!
